Did this shoot with Emily here for portraiture, and decided to play around with one of those beauty mirrors. Shot it with film to get a grainier texture for a moodier image. 
This was shot on the roof of a Manhattan townhouse…climbed the worlds most unstable ladder and crawled through a hole to get up there, and I do like shooting there! My original muse, Annie, has such a timeless face…
Oh this model was such a good sport…it was really hot that day and she modeled like a champ, with a light coating of powder all over her. This is what happens when I get loose and the museum and decide that I MUST do a statue shoot. No, I couldn’t wait till fall 😛

Going to get a little more personal here today. I shot this self portrait last week since I haven’t done that in years. I’m definitely more comfortable behind the camera, which meant it was time to confront those nervous feelings. I’m going to be completely honest here…the range of thoughts and emotions that went through me during that 30 minutes varied widely. Some thoughts congratulated my willingness to do this, while other thoughts were more negative towards my body type. Some thoughts raised me up, while others tried to knock me down. It was like I was split halfway, one part subject, one part photographer. I allowed the photographer side to take over, eased into it more, and forgot about the negatives (ugh…photographer pun not intended). My role as the photographer is to make the subject feel good (while geeking out over gear) so I did just that. This was done with a timer, so there was a lot of hopping back and forth to reset the camera and look at the shots to see what I needed to adjust. Shoulders back. Leg a little to the left. All that fun stuff I usually use to direct others. By the end, I was having fun!
Yes, I’m aware of my body type. And I don’t hate it anymore. Yes, I’m aware that dropping weight will make me healthier…I’m working on it and already feeling better. It’s been a struggle and I take full responsibility for it all. That’s not the point of this though. The point was to confront some things and I did. I don’t know what I’ll look like in a year or even three months. But this is me now. And I accept that. To all those that have wanted to try this and hesitated: don’t worry. You’re fucking fabulous 😉
Alysa rocks. I did about three shoots with her, and she didn’t have the need to be “pretty” even though she is obviously quite gorgeous. Modeling was her way of contributing to the arts, and I’m so glad I had the chance to work with her. She wasn’t afraid of going dark and gritty. Fiercely intelligent, and I sometimes find myself going through her shoots and finding an image I hadn’t noticed before…
I love working with a team…but I love being one on one with people too. This young woman has been doing figure modeling on the side for quite some time…other careers have included management and the Peace Corps, and now she’s getting her Masters. This shoot took place in just under an hour with some chatting. I’ll show you more in an upcoming entry, but that one will require more writing time. I love the elegance in her movements!
Lingerie shoots are one of my most requested shoots. Sometimes it’s as a gift to the models significant other, but more often than not, it’s just for her, to make her feel sexy and confident! Curious? Give it a try…you too, gentlemen!
One crazy story: I was at a womans house as she wanted to surprise her husband with some pin up style lingerie photos. She looked great, but was nervous, which is entirely normal at the beginning. The moment she got the courage to ditch the robe? Ding Dong! It was the Jehova’s Witnesses. She clutched her robe tight and explained that, thank you, she already has that book while I chased the dog, who of course managed to bolt the second she opened the door. I’m happy to report that the shoot still went well after that!
I loves me some corsets. I don’t loves me wearing them for too long…I do love shooting them though. Makes for beautiful lines, and not to mention, posture. I’ve been fascinated with them since I was a kid. I remember seeing Meet Me in St. Louis on Broadway, and getting to go to the dressing room of one of the actresses. She was absolutely wonderful to me…I remember the dress she had to wear on stage…that thing weighed a ton! The corset she wore underneath was authentic to the time period of the play. Later in life after trying my first, I was thoroughly impressed that she could sing in that thing! Anyway, corsets do tend to pop up in my shoots pretty often, and I notice the models attitude shift into a slightly more badass mode ;). Don’t worry, never had a model pass out on me.
